US Military Lodging

Military lodging is generally available on every DoD installation, although service members may prefer to stay off post at local hotels or furnished apartments and condos when available, or if the nature of their travel orders requires a long term assignment lasting several months.  Our previous blog post about the Army Lodging Reservations process discusses how to make reservations through the Army MWR Lodging Central Reservations line for active duty and reserve component personnel.  Most military lodging facilities on base will need to issue a statement of non-availability number to place of the travel voucher for filing with DFAS (the Defense Finance and Accounting System) which processes all travel claims for military lodging both on and off base.

Military lodging facilities on base offer reservations directly through the front desk lodging office, or through the central reservations line, and these facilities tend to be at the per diem reimbursement rate or slightly below.  Many of the local hotels near Department of Defense installations will offer rooms for government personnel directly at the Military Lodging Rates for official travel.  When the military lodging rate exceeds the maximum per diem rate allowed by the GSA (General Services Administration) schedule, a special request and waiver form can be submitted to verify that military lodging rates were unavailable at the time of the assignment; Although rare, when hotels and other types of accommodations are in high demand especially in large cities or during highly attended events, rates may at times exceed the max per diem rate for military lodging requirements in the U.S. and overseas.  See all of our Hotels and Military Vacation Rentals at TDYLodging.com.

Fort Sam Houston Lodging

MWR Army Lodging Reservations

Most major Army installations have a temporary lodging facility on post which caters to transient personnel on short term assignments.  Operating much like a hotel, each Army lodging facility on base has rooms available for military personnel and retirees.  Government and DoD contractors, while not required, have the option of staying in Army Lodging if space is available or they may stay in local hotels or corporate housing accommodations near the installation.  Active Duty, Army Reserve, and National Guard soldiers generally have the option of either staying in Army MWR Lodging or in a hotel on the local economy with either authorization from their unit or if provided a Statement of Non-Availability (SNA) number.  Depending on the nature of travel and the type of assignment orders (TDY assignment or a PCS relocation move), service members may not require unit authorization at times, and are able to make reservations on their own.  Army Lodging facilities may be fully booked at times requiring military personnel to reside in off base lodging.  Additionally, Army personnel may prefer to stay off post for several reasons including better accommodations, proximity to restaurants and nightlife, as well as the ability to accrue hotel rewards points or stay in better long term accommodations like a furnished apartment or condo rental.

Reservations can be made directly through each Army post facility, or through the Army Lodging Central Reservations line.  If post lodging is unavailable for official travelers, recommendations may be made for personnel required to stay off base because of unavailable rooms.  Travelers interested in staying at local hotels, furnished apartments, or corporate housing can browse our featured per diem rate lodging providers which offer a wide range of Army Lodging Reservations off post.  Often our extended stays and furnished apartments off post may be the best option for travel lasting longer than a couple of weeks, and our hotels are generally available within the authorized DoD Per Diem Rate for travel.

Fort Bliss Lodging, Housing, & El Paso Apartments

Fort Bliss is one of the most well known U.S. Army installations and is located next to El Paso, Texas, just across from the city of Juarez, Mexico.  The results of the Fort Bliss BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) survey initiated by Congress to assess all DoD installations in 2005, resulted in favorable findings for the Army post which increased the overall number of military and civilian personnel assigned to the Army base.  Housing initiatives have increased and construction on the post and in the city of El Paso have flourished as a result of the 2005 Fort Bliss BRAC recommendations.  The increase in troop strength has enabled the construction and maintenance of Fort Bliss Lodging and housing on post and in the local area with many new hotels, apartments, and housing communities in El Paso.

The Department of Defense operates housing initiatives on DoD installations which include Army Post housing and Air Force Base housing.  The Navy and Marine Corps also operate their own housing programs at CONUS and OCONUS locations near many major DoD installations.  The Department of Defense started a military housing privatization initiative in 1996.  TDY Lodging offers off base DoD Housing near every major military installation for short term travel or relocation while house hunting, or for newly assigned personnel who are on the post housing waiting list and in need of temporary lodging until base housing is available.

Congress enacted the Military Housing Privatization Initiative in 1996, which has enabled private companies to build and maintain base housing at several DoD installations.  Prior to the DoD housing privatization, each military branch maintained their own housing programs which were staffed with a greater number of federal government civil service employees and contractors.  The shift of many federal government jobs to the private sector has enabled many Defense contracting companies to bid on base housing projects.  The privatization of DoD housing initiatives allows private companies to contract base housing projects from start to finish, including construction, maintenance, and private funding.  The privatization of DoD housing has led to hundreds of military housing projects which have been transferred over to the private sector. 

DoD Housing Allowance
DoD service members have the option of either residing in military housing on post, or living off base with authorization.  Military personnel residing off base receive a standard monthly DoD Housing Allowance, which is based on rank/pay grade and the number of family members or dependents.  The 2011 Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH Rates) saw a significant drop based on falling home prices and rents, and the dip in the overall economy.  Most military members and local communities around many of the DoD installations are hoping for a significant increase in 2012 BAH Rates because this often allows service members to afford adequate off base housing in the local area near their assignment location.  The new DoD housing rates for Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps personnel will be released near the end of 2011.

About Department of Defense (DoD) Per Diem Rates
Federal government and military personnel on official temporary duty travel orders are generally authorized per diem for meals and lodging expenses.  The first travel allowance for Meals and Incidentals is reimbursed at a flat rate based on the geographic location.  Per Diem Lodging Rates are reimbursed up to a maximum allowable rate based on what the traveler spends.  TDY lodging rates vary by geographic location and can change throughout the year based on local hotel rates which can increase or decrease in popular travel and vacation destinations.  A per diem rate search by city or zip code can be used to calculate the total authorized per diem allowance for government travel.  Many sites offer a Per Diem Rate Calculator to determine the allowable travel rates, and official reimbursement amounts are available through the GSA per diem website.


GSA Federal Per Diem Rates 2011-2012
The 2011 government per diem rate decrease affected nearly every travel location.  A majority of cities saw a drop in per diem lodging rates, which is unfortunate for both military and government personnel as well as the lodging providers who have already experienced lower occupancy rates from a poor economy and struggling vacation and travel market.  Because of the 2011 per diem rate decrease, many lodging providers have been forced to cutback on some of their complimentary services offered to government and military travelers which at many hotels included free breakfast, complimentary newspapers, and free Internet.  Let's hope that 2012 Per Diem Rates increase for the benefit of both government travelers and the travel and hospitality industry.


Temporary Duty (TDY) & Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Entitlements
Per diem lodging rates are paid to government and military personnel on a TDY (Temporary Duty) assignment.  Permanent Change of Station (PCS) assignments are for long term relocation lasting several years and authorize a basic allowance for housing based on Military BAH Rates for the assignment location.

Base lodging on MacDillAir Force Base is extremely limited and most travelers prefer to stay in local hotels or fully furnished condo rentals in Tampa.  The Tampa Corporate Housing market has sky rocketed in recent years as a result of the high volume of assigned personnel to MacDill AFB, the home station for Special Operations Command (SOCOM) for all of the military service branches.  Lodging is readily available close to the base at the Tampa and MacDill per diem rate for travelers interested in quality accommodations.  Short term quarters for TDY personnel may prefer a hotel or extended stay, whereas newly assigned personnel in the process of house hunting, or if awaiting base housing, may prefer to rent a furnished condo while looking for permanent living arrangements

Air Force base housing on MacDill is limited on the installation.  Newly assigned Airmen and Soldiers will most likely want to look at either renting a house or condo, or purchasing a new place shortly after arrival.  The real estate prices in Florida and the greater Tampa-Saint Petersburg-Clearwater areas are at all time lows as a result of the overall housing downturn, so there may be no better time to buy than now.  MacDill AFB housing options off base are plentiful, so start searching in advance, and if looking for short term accommodations of several weeks or months, be sure to check out all of our MacDill Air Force Base Lodging options.

"Space A" Space Available Military Flights and Lodging

What better way to travel than through a Space Available "Space A" Military Flight, especially in today's budget minded times.  Military Space A, or Space Available flights and lodging are generally restricted to active duty Army, Air Force, Navy, or Marine Corps personnel and retirees.  Space available lodging is generally reserved for official assignments which require government or military orders.  Space A flights are free to military personnel and retirees.

Space A Travel Locations
Active Duty Military personnel and retirees can book space available flights throughout the United States, and overseas locations including Hawaii, Guam, and Europe.  One of the major drawbacks to booking a Space A flight may include a long wait time for aircraft maintenance, or needing to make several travel stops along the way.  For example someone traveling from Washington DC to Hawaii on a Space A flight may need to first travel to MacDill Air Force Base Florida, to Naval Air Station San Diego through the NAS North Island Coronado Navy base, and then on to the space available destination in Hawaii at one of the military installations on Oahu.  The length of a space available flight (although free) can be longer than most commercial flights, and can have several delays along the way.

How to Book Space A Travel?

Space available military flights can be booked directly thorough the local military installation.  The fastest way to book a Space A flight is to contact the Army or Air Force flight operations (flight ops) office on the military base for information on all inbound and outbound flights; they may refer you to a military Space A website or phone to be able to book a flight based on current availability.

So what happens if your flight is delayed or re-directed to another military installation, and you're at an unknown base or post and need a place to stay for the night.  Military retirees and active duty service members can always check with the local post lodging, Air Force inn, or temporary lodging quarters on base, or check out our DoD Lodging Reservations portal for availability at local hotels within the government rate.

TDY Lodging recently announced the addition of 83 Corporate Lodging Hotels through the Extended Stay hotel company which offers hundreds of extended stay properties nationwide.  The newly added hotels to our corporate lodging reservation system has augmented many of the military and government travel locations throughout the United States including Washington DC, Fort Benning Georgia, and MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.  The addition of New MacDill Air Force Base Hotels was also featured in the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Military and Corporate Lodging Program Adds Extended Stay Hotels to DoD Housing Inventory

WASHINGTON, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- TDY Lodging announced the addition of 83 hotels to the corporate lodging system designed for short term DoD housing and government travel. One of the largest nationwide providers of long-term corporate housing has added 83 new hotels near major military installations through TDY Lodging's rapidly expanding corporate housing reservation system.
